Third job: Steak restaurant

Third job: Steak restaurant

The owner of the Air-conditioner’s parts manufacturing company was looking to start a new business. Steak and wine restaurant. He wanted a good employee to whom he could entrust some task of restaurant. His employee in the company were permanent looking particularly to work there. Assigning them to restaurant could result them to resign. Moreover, Japan has lower work force and to find some trustworthy person within a time frame is difficult task. For the owner, I was the most eligible person that he could find around to entrust the job. The owner contacted me via host family. I did not have any prior experience in the business, but I was willing to learn more and go further in the world. The answer to the offer was YES. Thus, started my third job in Steak restaurant and wine bar.

When I first went to the restaurant, it was quite clean, and everything neatly arranged. I could feel the sense of design and the person to whom the whole business was entrusted to (in other words, restaurant and bar manager) was quite thorough in the business. I felt like I could learn many things from him. I told the manager that I was new to this business. I requested him to teach me proper language and manner that should be used with Japanese customer to which he accepted. For two days we were focusing on role playing of customer and waiter before the job started.

My job was to do everything in the restaurant apart from cooking. I had bad experience in Obento and felt that I should not be cooking in Japan. Not because I was afraid but simply not interested. In the restaurant, I did jobs as bartender, waiter, cleaner and sometimes gave company to those who wanted to simply talk to foreigners, to those who wanted to brag with their friends that they know a lot about Nepal or been there and to those who were lonely. My vocational school finished at 5 pm and I did job from 6 pm until 11 pm and sometimes 12. Whereas during holiday or long vacation I used to work from 10 am until last. Once I made around 300,000 yen in a month and that was the maximum amount that I made in a month until that day.

I had the opportunity to deal with the varieties of people in that restaurant. I experienced both good and bad times during my job there. The most frustrating thing that happened during my job was, one day a customer came to the restaurant for lunch. He ordered and I served. While serving I forgot to give him soup that came along with lunch. The mistake was on my part and he pointed that out to me. To this I sincerely apologized and provided him the soup immediately. But even after apologizing several times, the man kept verbally abusing and told to ask forgiveness by lowering the head to the floor. At this point, I gave up on apologizing, realized that this is an abuse, gave him a stern look and walked away. Since customer is treated as god in Japan and if the customer complains about anything, it is taken very seriously. I was mentally making myself ready to give up on job, as I was sure that he would complain my behavior to the manager. However, to my surprise, the man just left the restaurant paying the bill.
